About Dry Needling and Sue Falsone

[shaker_image]Dry needling, a mix of art and science, is performed by a physical therapist who uses dry needles to stimulate the muscles of the athlete. Sue Falsone, the woman behind the company and Chief Executive Officer of SFDN, launched a hands-on dry needling concept called Structure and Function Dry Needling, which shares a name with her organization! This system is characterized by a combination of skills Sue Falsone developed and perfected over the course of several decades in the industry. Sueís experience includes stints as Head Athletic Trainer for the Los Angeles Dodgers, where she was the first female Head Athletic Trainer in all of the 4 most popular sports in the US. She also served as the Head Athletic Coach for the United States Men’s National Soccer team.

Curriculum

The course wants to allow the clinician:

  • to work with acupuncture needles in a secure way, and abide by health rules and guidelines;
  • to get to know the anatomies of the subject so as to make sure they are safe as the practitioner is using the technique of dry needling on them;
  • to use intramuscular stimulation when treating various orthopedic and sports-related conditions; and become proficient in the knowledge of vacuum therapy techniques.
  • to point out to the practitioner the contraindications and safeguards for using the aforementioned technique;
  • to allow the students to employ dry needling techniques when treating different ortho and sports-related injuries;

After the course is over, the students will be able to use their newly found skills, and will be able to use them with success while working on their athletes.

They recommend that students bring a couple of specific items along with them: a TENS unit (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation), alligator clips, and a comprehensive book teaching the human anatomy. In addition to being in the process of approving CEUs for their future courses, Structure & Function: Dry Needling is approved by the Board of Certification, Inc. to provide continuing education to licensed Athletic Trainers.
