Here’s another question stemming from the shrapnel issue – not bent on adding e-stim, just looking for clarity in though process: if your goal is to address issues of intermittent numbness / weakness, and you cannot apply e-stim locally with needles, could you use a segmental approach and apply e-stim at the lumbar segments…would that produce similar effect neurologically without the potential for tissue irritation due to the shrapnel…or is that line of thinking just down the wrong path?

From Nick Rainey: I’ve seen it done at the segmental level for distal symptoms. I don’t see any drawback doing it.

From Sue Falsone: Agreed. Go for the lumbar segment. The issue with the estim locally is traumatizing the tissue by moving shrapnel. No worries at the segmental level. Go for it!

per Dr. Ma……..Since the metal is still inside the tissue, e-stim may cause more injury. So no e-stim locally (in the tissue where shrapnel is) for this case, only needling.
